The MINDSET Study

What is the purpose of the Study?

Diabetes is the world’s fastest growing chronic disease.  In Australia type 2 diabetes is predicted to triple over the next decade.  People with diabetes make many decisions on a day-to-day basis which impact on their health.  More than 95% of diabetes care is self-managed by people with diabetes in their homes.  The impact of type 2 diabetes on dietary freedom has the greatest impact on a person’s quality of life.  Implementation of Best Practice Guidelines for the dietetic management of type 2 diabetes in the private practice health care setting will be tested in this study.  The aim is to develop a model of care, which will improve nutrition, related diabetes self-management, reduce time demands and increase client access to dietetic services within the private practice setting.

How many people will take part in the study?

The study seeks to recruit approximately 160 patients with type 2 diabetes over a period of one year.

Recruitment

Adults with type 2 diabetes (not taking insulin), between the age of 18-75yrs, who do not have a condition which interferes with their ability to self manage will be eligible.  All participants will need to be referred by their doctor.

Benefits Participants Can Expect

All participants will receive support from Kelli Hale Accredited Practising Dietitian in self-managing their diet, via 5 dietetic consults delivered using best practice, with minimal out-of-pocket expense**.  They will also receive learning resources at no additional cost to them including a 90 page book ‘The Key to Healthy Eating – Type 2 Diabetes’.  The results obtained from this study may be beneficial to other people with type 2 diabetes in the future.

** Patients referred by their doctors under a CDMP (Medicare Scheme) will be bulk billed with no out-of-pocket expense.  Private patients can expect to pay less than half the price of usual private practice fees.  Patients with private health cover may be eligible to claim rebates.
